How is Cannabis Measured?

When you walk into a recreational cannabis dispensary, you’ll find that every product available is measured in some way. While most of them are strictly in grams, that doesn’t mean they’ll last the same length or that you’ll use the same amount. While a majority of things are weighed in grams, you may find things also in milligram, but the terminology doesn’t stop there.

If you hear the term flower, the person speaking is simply referring to cannabis in which you would break up yourself and put into something like a bong or bowl, or roll into a joint. Depending on how much you are looking for you may hear a budtender say a few different terms.

Cannabis Flower Measurements:

Cannabis Flower is weighed out in grams, however you may hear words like an eighth of weed, or a quarter from the budtender or person helping you. This just refers to how many grams are in the package.

An eighth of weed is 3.5 grams, while a quarter is just double that with 7 grams. A total 28 grams makes up an ounce which is also a popular denomination of cannabis measurements.

In comparison, most pre-rolled joints you’ll find on the market are 1 gram. If you are rolling your own you can usually make 1-3 joints depending on the size. If packing into a bowl you should get closer to 3-5 full packs of the bowl, as bowls tend to be smaller.

Cannabis Joint Pre-Roll Measurements:

While most pre-rolled marijuana joints in the Michigan cannabis market tend to be 1 gram, you will find different sizes but they would still be measured in grams. Some other popular sizes are 0.7, 1.2, or 0.5, which you can regularly find in multi-packs. The great thing about pre-rolls is you can always put it out and come back to it later if you can’t finish it!

Cartridge/Vape Measurements:

Cartridges tend to usually come in 1 gram, however some brands do also make a 0.5 (½) gram. If you are new to smoking and don’t partake regularly, you can make a cartridge last anywhere from 2-4 weeks. However, if you tend to puff on it daily, you can go through one in just a few days.

Concentrate Measurements:

The standard measurement of concentrates is 1 gram. However 1 gram of concentrate will go a lot further than 1 gram of flower. What we mean by that is, you can take one hit of a concentrate and feel the effects a lot stronger than one hit of flower. That is because concentrates are an extraction that takes the THC out of the plant and are more potent.

Another term you may hear at a Michigan cannabis dispensary are baller jars; A baller jar is when dispensaries put a larger amount of concentrates in their packaging, buteach company is different. There isn’t really a universal standard Usually, you can find baller jars that are anywhere between 3.5 grams and 7 grams per package.

THC Edibles Measurements:

Edibles are measured in MG as opposed to actual grams. For a long time Michigan only allowed 100MG packages to be sold in the Michigan recreational cannabis market. However as of 2022, they started to allow 200MG.

One could argue that the standard for gummies is 10MG per piece, which is a good place to start for a beginner. With the change in the law though, some companies are starting to producer more milligrams into a single piece, but you can always cut them into pieces if you aren’t trying to eat the whole thing.

For those new to edibles, start slow. You can always eat more. While each edible is different, gummies tend to come in 10MG per piece and we usually say to just start off with 1 or even biting it in half if you have never had edibles.
